Visit the GOV.UK website to learn more about eligibility and the various types of adaptations available to you. Alternatively, you can contact your local authority.
Most individuals are eligible for zero-rated VAT when purchasing mobility equipment to aid with disabilities or chronic illnesses. There are two types of VAT exemptions that provide discounts to individuals with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and seniors over the age of 60.
0% VAT – This exemption covers individuals with chronic illnesses or disabilities who require mobility equipment for personal and domestic use. Chronic illness or disability refers to the following:
- Physical or mental impairments that have long-term adverse effects on everyday activities, such as arthritis, osteoporosis, heart conditions, and more.
- Medically certified chronic sicknesses, including diabetes.
- Individuals who are terminally ill.
To check the conditions for VAT relief, you can review notice 701/7 “VAT Relief for Disabled People” on the HM Revenue & Customs website.
