A Guide to Choosing Your Stairlift

Written by Matt Armstrong, Sales Director at EMS Lifts Ltd

“After spending twenty years in the mobility industry here in the UK, one thing has become abundantly clear to me: caregiving, though an act of love and duty, casts a long shadow over the lives of those who undertake it. Through my interactions with countless customers at EMS Lifts, I’ve come to understand the profound impact caregiving has on careers, particularly in terms of saving for retirement and the myriad of hidden costs it incurs. This article is a reflection of my two decades of observations and conversations with caregivers across the nation.”

The Financial Strain: Beyond the Surface

“In discussions about the financial implications of caregiving, we must look beyond the obvious expenses. The real costs are a complex web of financial repercussions. As highlighted by Carers UK, nearly half of the caregivers in the UK find it challenging to afford basic utilities. Many have faced the tough choice of reducing their work hours or leaving their jobs entirely—2.6 million Britons have made this sacrifice. This loss of income affects not just their current financial situation but also significantly decreases their savings and pension contributions, jeopardising their future financial stability.”

“In my years at EMS Lifts, I’ve witnessed caregivers forced to choose between their career trajectory and their caregiving responsibilities. The penalties are severe: fewer promotions, missed training opportunities, and a higher risk of long-term unemployment. The Centre for Economics and Business Research puts these losses into stark perspective, highlighting the significant impact on potential earnings and pension accumulations.”

The Hidden Costs: A Closer Look

“Caregiving is akin to an iceberg—what’s visible is just the tip. The hidden costs, both tangible and intangible, are vast. The physical health deterioration among caregivers is alarming, leading to conditions like chronic pain, stress, and fatigue, a reality backed by data from the Office for National Statistics. Furthermore, the Mental Health Foundation points to a heightened risk of mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression among caregivers.”

“The opportunity cost of time also weighs heavily on caregivers, who often sacrifice their personal hobbies, relaxation, and social activities. Young caregivers face particularly challenging circumstances, with their education and professional training often disrupted or delayed, which can cast a long shadow over their future prospects.”

The Cost of Home Adaptations

“As the Sales Director of EMS Lifts, I regularly see the financial impact of necessary home adaptations such as stairlifts, lifts, and ramps. While these modifications are essential for maintaining independence and safety, they represent a significant cost. However, it’s crucial to remember that these expenses, significant as they may be, are generally more affordable than the alternative of moving to a care facility. Staying in one’s own home not only saves money but also promotes comfort and familiarity, which are invaluable.”

Navigating the Path Forward

“The journey of a caregiver is fraught with challenges, but it is a path that need not be walked alone. It is imperative that we recognise and address the hidden costs and sacrifices involved in caregiving. This recognition must translate into action—through comprehensive support systems from both government and corporate sectors, including flexible work arrangements and employee assistance programs.”

The Future of Caregiving

“The narrative of caregiving is complex and woven with threads of sacrifice, love, and unspoken challenges. It’s a narrative that needs to be told and heard, urging a call to action for comprehensive support and recognition of the silent yet monumental role caregivers play in our society.”

“As we move forward, let’s not overlook the unseen burdens of caregiving. Let’s work together to ensure that this challenging path is marked by support, understanding, and respect for the invaluable contributions caregivers make every day in our community.”
