What is a stairlift?

A stairlift is a motorised chair that runs along a secure rail fitted to a staircase, allowing people with limited mobility to move safely between floors. Designed for individuals who find stairs difficult due to age, disability, or injury, stairlifts provide independence and reduce the risk of falls.

Stairlifts come in two main types: straight stairlifts, which fit standard staircases without bends, and curved stairlifts, which are custom-built for stairs with turns, spirals, or landings. Modern stairlifts are fitted with safety features such as seatbelts, swivel seats for easier entry and exit, and folding footrests to keep the stairs clear when not in use.

By removing the physical strain of climbing stairs, stairlifts allow people to remain in multi-storey homes more comfortably and cost-effectively than alternatives such as moving house or undertaking major renovations.
