How are stairlifts powered?

Modern stairlifts are powered by rechargeable batteries, which are charged via a connection to the mains when the stairlift is parked at the top or bottom of the rail.

  • Batteries: Usually sealed lead-acid batteries located beneath the chair.
  • Charging: Continuous “trickle charge” when not in use.
  • Reliability: Batteries ensure the stairlift continues to operate during a power cut.

The batteries typically need replacing every 3–5 years, depending on use.
